Confessions of a Hobbit Lass

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit,” one of the most memorable lines in all of literature served as the opening line to J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book The Hobbit. It seemed fitting to open my own foray into the world of writing with such a line, given as this blog is to be the publication of a hobbit at heart.

I have counted myself among the hobbits ever since I first picked up Tolkien’s tale. I’m very short in stature with hairy feet that I have long since given up shaving, and a pleasantly round belly that conveys my love of food, especially mushrooms. I enjoy the simple things in life and would much rather sit in my favourite armchair by the fire with a good book and a strong cup of tea than go on an adventure.
However, it is an adventure that I now find myself on. Much like Bilbo I have left the only home I have ever known to make a trek through great peril to hopefully claim vast riches in the end, in other words, I have embarked on the adventure that is college. Unlike Bilbo I find myself without an entourage of dwarfs and a meddling wizard to push me on my way, though I will say that I managed to make it out my front door with my handkerchief.
In keeping with my hobbit inclinations, I am rather unprepared for the adventure with which I am now faced. Life is big, scary, and vastly unlike the pleasant town in which I grew up. I have had to say goodbye to the rolling hills and gentle forests that I loved dearly and hello to the mountain on which I now live.
My hope, however deep inside me that hope is buried, is that I have the courage to turn what appears to be scary into something remarkable. For it is by courage and determination that I will survive my venture into the world, much like it was the courage of the smallest of creatures which saved Middle Earth.
So without further ado, let me introduce my blog: the anecdotes of a hobbit at heart trying to survive the modern world.
